Improved Stoves

The Improved Stoves project was designed to increase the efficiency of traditional stoves and resolve some of the problems of deforestation in the community of Las Crucitas. By introducing the use of a chimney the stove uses less wood, produces less smoke, preserves heat longer and reduces the health hazards of an open fire.

Training sessions provided the practical skills for both men and women to construct the stoves and raised awareness of environmental and health issues. The beneficiaries were encouraged to pass on their learning to others, strengthening community participation and ultimately empowering the local community.
