Leicester Advocating Fair Trade - LaFT

The LMLG’s first hand knowledge and experience in Nicaragua enables us to make a valuable contribution to the development and delivery of educational resources, campaigns and awareness raising events around trade justice issues.

The LMLG is a member of a coalition of local organisations * working together to raise awareness of fair trade and trade justice and played a major role in helping to establish Leicester’s status as a Fairtrade City in 2002.

The coalition co-ordinates a range of events designed to increase understanding of trade issues, promote fairtrade and inform people of the impact their consumer choices can have on global inequality. To this end LaFT has produced a guide of where to buy Fairtrade in Leicester, and organises events, activities and talks during Fairtrade Fortnight including visits by fairtrade producers from around the world.

There is also a sub-group, (LaFTeR) which deals specifically with providing resources and support around trade justice issues in an educational context.

Leicester Advocating Fair Trade (LaFT) members include: CAFOD, Christian Aid, Environ, Just – Leicester’s Fairtrade shop, Knighton Trade Justice Group, Leicester City Council, Leicester College, Leicester Diocese, Midlands Co-operative Society, Oxfam, Skillshare International, Tearfund and World Development Movement.

LaFTeR

Leicester Advocating Fair Trade (LaFT) has recently set up a sub-group to deal with educational resources (LAFTeR). Making use of the wide range of expertise within LaFT we are working alongside a number of organisations (including Leicester University Botanic Garden, the Just Shop, the Co-op, the East Midlands Network for Global Perspectives in Schools and Environ) to provide fair trade information and activities for use by schools, colleges, youth groups and people involved in lifelong learning. Our aim is to offer support for educators and youth workers in Leicester wishing to explore fair trade issues and build an understanding of how actions at local level can have a global impact.
