Following the year spent in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, Chloe Hill, PhD student at Loughborough University talked about
her research into the Meso-American biological corridor.
The evening concluded with a reading from the Peasant Poets of Solentiname in memory of Peter Wright.

An interactive event invited
young people (14-16) across the region
to critically engage with the key issues of trade, aid and debt.
Workshops and debates provided opportunity for shared learning among
youth groups and schools already involved
in activities around the MPH theme as well as those wanting to find out more.

CLUB LA PACHANGA,
CHACON Y SU TIMBA

It was an opportunity to hear and dance the night away to the best of Latin American Salsa,
which raised £700
for projects in Masaya.
Cuban-born artist Osvaldo Chacon had played alongside many of the great salsa artists, including
Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Oscar de Leon and others. He delighted us with the great Timba
sound of his 7-piece ensemble "Chacon y su Timba" - a London-based band with a
fantastic reputation!
The LMLG provided a display and information about successful projects that have been undertaken
as a result of the money raised at Club La Pachanga events.

Leicester & Me (26th June 2005) |

This is the culminating event at Belgrave hall, following a year long festival celebrating Leicester's cultural diversity. Activities for all ages
were offered across a number of different themes, from music to food and crafts. The LMLG provided the Nicaraguan contribution and brought a Latin American Flavour to each of the activity areas!

"Rich" World "Poor" World (18th June 2005) |

The event aimed to raise awareness of the MAKE POVERTY HISTORY campaign included
a lunch to highlight global inequality between rich and poor, followed by a film
“The World Stopped Watching” documenting what has become
of the people and nation now that Nicaragua is
no longer under the media spotlight and a discussion led by Ed Brown
Chair of LMLG and a lecturer at Loughborough University.

‘Learning About Fairtrade Through Your Senses’ (Sat 21 May 2005) |

The LMLG presented workshops and displays in collaboration with the Just Shop (Leicester’s Fairtrade Shop)
to celebrate Cultural Diversity Day during Adult Learner’s Week. The event raised awareness about trade justice
issues with a focus on Nicaragua. The public were invited to taste cookies made with fairtrade bananas,
chocolate and sugar, smell the rich aroma of Nicaraguan Fairtrade coffee, touch the Nicaraguan artefacts
(and other fabrics from the Just Shop). A lively display provided photos and visual information and everyone
was able to try their hand at a quiz and make a their own book mark with a fairtrade message as a reminder of
the event.

Central America Conference (10th April 2005) |

The 2005 National
Conference on Central America was hosted by the Bristol Link with Nicaragua (BLINC) as part of their
20th anniversary celebrations. The weekend included a film screening on Fri 8th April at
the Watershed.

Cultural Connections (Sat 12 March 2005) |

The LMLG presented a
dynamic cultural event to celebrate Leicester’s twin towns around the globe. The afternoon included a
packed programme of interactive art displays, cultural games and craft activities, music and salsa sessions
as well as environmental challenges.
This took place during the Fairtrade Fortnight, the event featured a range of snacks from Leicester’s sister
cities including refreshing tropical fruit juices and the opportunity for people to make and taste ‘the perfect cup of
coffee’.

A collaborative event with Club la Pachanga in Leamington in support of
projects in Masaya. The night consisted of live Cuban music, featuring top musicians
from Latin America & Europe. El Equipo brought hot Salsa and Cuban Son with a serious
groove that combined modern influences with traditional styles.

an illustrated talk highlighting the prospects and challenges of supporting projects and
partnerships in Masaya.

Celebrating LMLG’s work with young people, this exhibition and performance explored local identity and global diversity through Leicester’s link with Nicaragua. The dynamic enthusiasm of the young people at the Contact Project combined with the talents of community poet Mark Goodwin and local sculptor Austin Orwin to produce a vibrant presentation.

One of Nicaragua’s main exports is its own people, seeking a better life where they can. This showing of ‘Desde el Barro al Sur’, a documentary film that records the images if Nicaragua’s most profound reality, gives flesh, voice and feeling to the thousands of people who uprooted their lives and set off to neighbouring Costa Rica.

talk presented by the Leicester Masaya Link Group on topics such as Nicaragua and what difference the revolution made.

Leicester’s status as a Fairtrade City, raise awareness of Leicester’s link with Masaya and highlight the availability

For 3 years running, we have contributed
to a city-wide literature festival project run by Leicester City Libraries.
In June 2002 we welcomed Peter Wright and friends of the LMLG reading his translations of the Peasant Poets of
Solentiname.
