Make Poverty History

MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY is the UK’s voice in the Global Call to Action Against Poverty which aims to drive forward the struggle against poverty and injustice through a unique alliance of charities, trade unions, campaigning groups, faith communities and celebrities. Mobilising around key opportunities in 2005, such as the G8 gathering in Scotland, those involved intend to influence urgent and meaningful policy change on 3 critical and inextricably linked areas: TRADE, DEBT and AID.

The Leicester Masaya Link Group is one of more than 600 organisations who have signed up to MPH at national level. In Leicester we are also collaborating with other organisations and individuals to co-ordinate and contribute to events and activities to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved in the campaign at a local level.

In June, we held an event, Rich World, Poor World, which involved a lunch aimed at highlighting global inequality, with a focus on Nicaragua and development projects in Masaya. MPH banners are appearing on a number of buildings, including the Town Hall (where our office is based) and On World White Band Day (1 July), the LMLG joined over a hundred local supporters to wrap the Victorian fountain outside the Town Hall in a giant white band. Details of local MPH events can be found on www.skillshare.org
